Asphalt#1 invites spectators to see Charleroi in a new light as the city transforms into a real open air museum. For the launch of the 2012 biennial, the BPS22 proposed collaboration with the artist JR on the Inside Out/Smile! Project 750 smiling faces were displayed across the city for six months.
For Asphalt#1, the BPS22 took artistic direction from the visual arts and produced a series of displays in various locations in Charleroi's centre. Several great names in street art, including international artists rarely shown in Belgium, took over the public space.
