Marcel ProustPhilosophy tasters #2

  • Debate
01.12.2019

This season, Maud Hagelstein, art philosopher and researcher at FNRS/ULiège, brings you on a journey through literature to search for stories about art.

In “In Search of Lost Time” (“The Prisoner”), Marcel Proust recounts the extreme shock felt by the writer Bergotte before the “View of Delft” painting by Vermeer. The colour in its materiality, this “little yellow section of wall” on which Bergotte’s eye fixates, elicits a real trauma in him: dizzy, he collapses onto a sofa and dies. We’ll take this famous story, tackle the issues it raises, and through it we’ll question the bedazzling and disruptive power of painting.
