This season, Maud Hagelstein offers to take you on a journey to discover contemporary works of art created with all life forms, building bridges to the world of other living beings.

Works of art can give momentum to our desire for adventure. They provide us with all sorts of peculiarities that widen our perceptions of the other, of non-human life forms. Works of art induce confusion; they shake us up and sometimes bowl us over. With their hubris they reiterate that life is fleeting and encompasses far more than we can understand or control. In olden times, curio cabinets hosted our wildest fantasies about living things: lightning stones, carapaces, dried butterflies, unicorn horns, painted herbarium, stuffed crocodiles, automata, conjoined babies. These incongruous collections grew out of a fantasy about extinction, a fantasy of vanished living beings, and a susceptibility to strangeness that contemporary artists are now reviving.
