The work Statu quo nunc (2016) by artists David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin – on show at the BPS22 – consists of a photograph of the “immovable ladder” located under one of the windows in the facade of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, accompanied by a contract signed between the artists and several collectors. This contract is linked to the stability of the ladder, which is taken as a symbol of the status quo: the artists commit to reimbursing the collectors the price they paid for this contract if the ladder disappears or is moved within 30 years, a sign of the breach of the understanding between the Christian communities of the Holy Sepulchre.
Using this example, the conference showcases artists who, since the 1960s and the appearance of conceptual art, have turned towards new experiments where contracts, agreements, and protocols play new roles.
