Death and the questions it raises have always fascinated artists, as witnessed, for example, by the many vainglorious works created from ancient times right down to today. But what about modern art? How are current artists getting to grips with the subject? How, in material terms, do they deal with the different aspects - philosophical, religious, biological, etc. - of a subject as vast and as intriguing as death? In a society where, through the media, death (through wars, attacks, murders) too often becomes just another “show on the air”, how do modern artists manage to speak about it in a way that matters? This question and many others will be tackled during this conference.
With Alice Mathieu, art historian.
