Marcel Berlanger's exhibition Fig. becomes the backdrop to the play Iwona, une Opérette électronique, based on Witold Gombrowicz's Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy, written and directed by Françoise Berlanger, the artist's sister.
Gombrowicz asked; "How can you turn a real drama into a light operetta?" Iwona attempts a contemporary response to his question, in the encounter between theatrical words and musical composition, mixing live electronic music, acoustic instruments and sung voices in a performance which sees monumental stupidity brought together with the most moving drama.
Camille Saint-Saëns declared, "The operetta is a daughter of the comic opera gone wrong, but the girls who turn out badly aren't always lacking in charm".
Here's the kind of project which teases our cerebral gymnastics and excites our attention. Behind Iwona is Françoise Berlanger who, for more than twelve years, has been creating sacred forms that are both incredibly audacious and utterly demanding, and Gilbert Nouno, composer, sound artist and performer. His music is bound up with the visual arts and digital technologies and crosses the borders of writing and improvisation. Together, they take possession of Gombrowicz's Yvonne, a poor girl with no language and no codes, lost in a perverted palace with a lecherous king, a hysterical queen and a problematic prince.
